What is this?

A pair of .epub files you can go under the hood with using an app like the Sigil e-book editor, and drop in your own text to make an e-book version of a hack of Alone Among the Stars by Takuma Okada. If you don't already have an e-book reader app, then you can download Calibre (or another of your choice) to get started.

The .epub file format has its own advantages and disadvantages versus others like .pdf and .txt. One big advantage is flexibility: the file can change to suit whatever display it's viewed on while remaining readable, and a reader can easily change the font, text size, colour mode, and other features to whatever's most comfortable and accessible for them on the device they're using (fixed-layout e-books aside).

The main disadvantages are the lack of precise layout + artistic control—which is the flipside of the flexibility the reader gets—and the learning curve for making them. This template is meant to help out a bit with that learning curve. You can also check out Ebook Express for a more general and thorough introduction!

What's in the pack?

  • a template .epub file with a guide on how to turn that file into a .epub of your own Alone hack
  • a super-light .epub demo of Alone Among the Stars

The template comes with heavily subsetted versions of Comfortaa, the title font used in the original game, as well as Dicier, my analog game icon typeface, and some guidance on how to change or remove them.

What about their licenses?

The text of Alone Among the Stars is used with permission. The fonts used are available under their own licenses (see Style.css in the template file for more info). The text and templating by me is available under the CC0 1.0 public domain dedication—it's voluntarily in the public domain, so you can freely use this to produce personal and commercial projects without attribution.
